Mneep eek I have arrived.

Yeas, here’s me blogging from… university! Crikey.

That’s where I am now. Well then I’ll give you a brief run through of events since my arrival. Probably won’t end up being very brief though! I arrived yesterday afternoon at 2pm, turns out I brought WAY too much stuff, it’s still all strewn across my room. Before unpacking I went out to lunch with Dad and then walked back to the uni. So, unpacking and my room. Well the room itself is rather small, and smells a bit off. Even before I was in it for 10minutes. So here’s the bomb-site that was my room yesterday…

Can you see my lovely metal frame of a bed? It’s actually rather comfy! At least it is now I have my duvet and everything laid out. There’s still a hideous mess around though as I try to find space to fit everything away. Our kitchen is… well.. hot! There’s no other way to describe it, it seems rather small for 7 or so people. Only one fridge-freezer and the like. Ah well, I’m sure it’ll be ok. Soon after moving in I met a girl on my course and we nipped over to the SU bar for an adventurous glass of… coke. Then I came back and finished unpacking and met one of my two European flatmates in the kitchen. There are tonnes of foreigners around since all the international students moved in a week early for ‘orientation’. A bit like orienteering only less wooded I imagine.
Oh yeh I also went for an explore around, there’s some cool shops really close by. And by cool I mean incredibly geeky. The first shop I went in was ‘Forbidden Planet’. Unfortunately the nearest food shop I could find was an M&S so my first food shop was hideously expensive. Luckily I only bought a minimum of things. But my first night’s cooking was an utter disaster. I started to cook pasta but because my pans are new the bottom of it started to smoke. The kitchen light kept turning off because its done my motion sensor. I got so paranoid about the little bit of smoke setting off the fire alarm on my first night there that I stopped cooking and had cereal for dinner instead :unhap: Ah well.
I woke up this morning and registered with the uni, an hour long queue which disappeared just as I was through it, typically. I chatted to a nice couple from Holland whilst waiting, the bloke is going to do Physics research and teaching at the real Cambridge university. Sounds impressive! After that I got some lunch and went to get my internet details from the library. So luckily I’m now online and have my fancy .ac.uk account and everything, along with my spangley new student ID card. After that I just blibbled around for a while and didn’t have the courage to go and join a group of ARU students sitting on the field. I came back and decided some real shopping was in order and so got the free SU bus to ASDA. Luckily I had the courage to socialise with a couple of people on the bus and we got to know each other ok whilst out doing shopping  We arranged to meet up in the evening as well to go to the karaoke in the SU Bar. The karaoke was fairly naff, but it was a good chance to get out and meet people. People from Slovenia, Hungary and the like! Nice folks, I feel I could join them at a table in the bar now if I saw them there.
As for socialising… how? It’s still beyond me. But I’m getting by OK. I thought I’d miss home but never get homesick, clearly I was rather mistaken. Now I’m off and independent I crave being back near you lot, people I know well, and back in my own house where the food and drink was plentiful. But here I am. I’m sure the settling in will continue, especially once my course has started on Monday. So this is John, from ARU, signing off. Miss y’all.
Miss you too. :frown:
I’m glad you’ve been doing some socialising, it sounds like you’ve had the courage to approach many more people than I will when I move into Warwick. You’ll make your real friends when your course starts anyway, now is the time to explore and get used to your new surroundings. I know you’ll be ok. (that emoticon doesn’t exist but it should) xXx
Phearage! The important thing is, the internet works. I had better give my wok a few trial runs before I go to uni to avoid smoking pasta…
Soph: Thank you for the encouragement. I’m sure you’re right, its just a bit daunting when everyone around you is moving in friend groups :U
Adam: Arr, shame about the no games policy, but life goes on.
Come back home John!! It’s never to late! That’s what I WOULD be saying to you if I didn’t know that you will have a really great time once you’ve settled in and I if I didn’t know how much fun you were going to have. I wish you all the best. It seems so strange that you’re so far away now…I don’t want to grow up.
Robyn: :buck: I don’t want to grow up either! Thank you for the words of encouragement, I’m looking forward to the course starting now and getting into the swing of it properly. :U
